Andesite Sneak Peak

March 15th, 2010

Introduction

Debuting in April, the Island Stone andesite collection is the newest addition to our exclusive range of tiles and claddings. This extraordinary material is available in different compositions and finishes designed to bring a unique appeal to your next design.

Grey andesite is a distinctive new volcanic stone, sourced from an exclusive international quarry. The grey stone is punctuated by dark rock fragments along with lighter grains embedded in the fine volcanic rock. *Used for all honed and chipped finishes and select flamed finishes

Grey flecked andesite: Found in the same region and of a similar composition to “Grey Andesite”, the flecked material is recognizable by the embedded crystals that sparkle of the surface.  *Used with select flamed finishes

Surfaces:

  • Honed (h): A smooth, matte surface that illuminate the unique surface of our grey andesite. Perfect for both floor and wall use.
  • Flamed(f):  A natural looking textured surface that emphasizes the unique composition of andesite. Rough enough to create a distinct look, while still appropriate for use both on a wall or floor
  • Chipped (c):  A powerful three dimensional relief to bring a rugged appeal to our grey andesite.  Designed for creating an impact on a wall or any vertical surface

Innovative Approach to Tile Design

Stacked Pebble Suspenders

Stacked Pebble Suspenders

With our distinctive line of tiles and claddings, we pride ourselves on promoting and supporting the most innovative and contemporary approaches to design. Regardless of the impressive hotel, resorts and high end residential designs we have been a part of, David Lindsy, Manager and Lead Designer of Natural Stone & Tile in Arlington, Tennessee, blew us away in his use of Island Stone tiles during a recent design event in Memphis. Using professional models, David took select tile and created wearable clothing that were worn during the event. Combined with displays created using Island Stone glass mosaics, the crowd of designers and architects were enlightened as to just how versatile and creative tile design can be. While the weight constraints of using tile as attire will probably prevent this approach from ever gaining wider acceptance, David should be applauded for opening our eyes to previously unconsidered approaches to designing with tile. If you are looking for someone to offer original and inspirational Island Stone tile design ideas for your next project, David, who’s history of using Island stone tiles and claddings in residential and commercial projects alike, will be sure to offer some great ideas. http://nstone.com/

Portugal use of tile

October 22nd, 2009

A recent trip to Portugal opened up my eyes to the versatility and personality that tile offers. Portugal is built from tile. While here in the states, we tend to see tile as appropriate for select environments, in Portugal there is no floor or wall that is left unfinished. Tile driveways, tile retaining walls, tile rooms. Small kitchens and bathrooms, which would be otherwise unnoticeable are transformed by the tile used. While from afar, a Portuguese home might appear very mundane and standardized, it is the tile work that makes each unique and reflects the personality and style of the inhabitants. This is the lesson from which we could learn much. You don’t need to own a mansion to warrant using tile in your home. Tile can turn even the smallest, simplest room into an exclusive environment. A simple subtle colored glass tile design behind your bathroom mirror, the powerful look of Medan pebbles in your kitchen backsplash, rough rustic cladding transforming a fireplace or the comforting texture of a random tile or pebble tile on the bathroom floor. Look around your house, each room is a chance to project your personal design ethic
